Live on the Tablet

"The main change is that [our solution] was implemented in Director, as opposed to on paper, as all previous prototypes were. The Media Library has been moved to the top, and its tab protrudes from the header to make it more apparent and invite interaction".
The Interface

The interface tested in this iteration incorporates minor changes from the previous one. The major change is that it was implemented in Director, as opposed to on paper, as all previous prototypes were.

* The Media Library has been moved to the top, and its tab protrudes from the header to make it more apparent and invite interaction.
* The station pull-down has been combined with the header to better associate them.
* The “X” icon was removed from each group tab and replaced with a “Delete Group” button. When tapped, a dialog box appears, asking the user to confirm deletion.

What we wanted to find out

Through this user test we wanted to test if users could understand and successfully interact with the changes introduced in this interface. This includes the removal of groups, and finding and accessing the Media Library. We also wanted to find out if all of the interactions previously performed by users on paper prototypes would still be successfully performed on this higher fidelity prototype.

The Task

Our two users were given a scenario which asked them to imagine they were preparing for and teaching the Macroinvertebrates station, with tasks which involved them doing the following things:

* Rearranging the order of images within a group
* Removing a group from the presentation
* Creating and naming new media groups and adding images to them
* Rearranging the order of groups within the presentation
* Presenting images from consecutive groups
* Presenting images from a group out of sequence
* Switching stations

After the task, we asked users follow up questions and did some participatory design.

What We Learned

* Users were able to easily re-order, add and delete groups.
* Users were able to easily find the Media Library and drag images from it to their groups.
* Users had no difficulty jumping around to groups out of sequence.
* Users were able to easily tap images to make them big, and use the next and previous buttons.
* Users were able to switch stations easily using the new station dropdown.
